Warrington Zuill is Honoured
The latest recipient of CableVision's quarterly Community Service Award is a dedicated local sports historian. Warrington ?Soup? Zuill was honoured this morning at an event held at the BUEI attended by the Minister of the Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce, the Hon. D. Neletha I. Butterfield, JP, MP, and the
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Sports and Recreation, Ms. Ellen-Kate Horton.
Warrington Zuill, 76, has made a name for himself as an avid historian, keeping track of local football and cricket statistics and ensuring the wealth of data he maintains is always up-to-date. His efforts to help sports media, writers, and the general public locate historical facts and photographs relating to famed sporting events such as Cup Match are well-known. Mr. Zuill grew up in St. George's, but spent summers at his grandparents' house in Somerset where the Cricket Club stands today. His uncle was none other than legendary skipper Warren Simmons.
Mr. Zuill himself played football with the St. George's Colts Club in the former Bermuda Football League B Division in the late 1940s and early 1950s. In 1953, Mr. Zuill was instrumental in helping to form the rules and regulations for the Bermuda Football Association FA Challenge Cup.
These days, Mr. Zuill is the official custodian of all statistical data relating to Cup Match. In 2001, Mr. Zuill was invited to share his knowledge of Cup Match history at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington, D.C. He is also a full-time taxi driver who has held a public service vehicle license since 1952.
The Minister of the Environment, Telecommunications and E-Commerce, the Hon. D. Neletha I. Butterfield, offered her congratulations to Mr. Zuill: ?It gives me tremendous pleasure to be here this morning as we honour Mr. Zuill. His dedication to sharing our sports history with fellow Bermudians is inspiring. He has found a way to link that which he loves with that which he does. On behalf of the Government of Bermuda, I would like to thank Mr. Zuill for his service to the community and congratulate him on his achievements. I would also like to thank Bermuda CableVision for continuing to recognise those people in our community who are making a difference in the lives of others.?
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Sports and Recreation, Ms. Ellen-Kate Horton, also congratulated Mr. Zuill on his lifetime commitment to preserving sports history in Bermuda: ?Bermudians love football, and they love cricket. Both are national pastimes activities many of us love to participate in, whether as players or as fans. Who better to be the careful guardian of our cultural history than Mr. Zuill? I am delighted to be here today to honour this exemplary gentleman and to thank him for his dedication to the preservation of sports history in Bermuda.?
Terry Roberson, General Manager of Bermuda CableVision, said: ?Mr. Zuill is an inspiration to all of us, not just for his commitment to recording all of the memorable moments in local sports history, but because of his heartfelt desire to give back to the community in which he lives. He demonstrates both a sincere appreciation for the facts and figures that make up the rich fabric of Bermuda's history, and a true dedication to preserving that data for the benefit of future generations. It gives me great pleasure to honour Mr. Zuill today with a CableVision Community Service Award.?
For his part, Mr. Zuill explained why Cup Match is so important to him: ?As a young boy, I used to wait for the whistle from the Corona in Market Wharf which marked the start of another Cup Match weekend. I have great recollections of the Corona ferrying us back and forth from St. George's to
Somerset whenever the games were played in the west. My love of sporting events, and my dedication to sports history, began back then and has stayed with me throughout the years. After all, few traditions in Bermuda represent family togetherness and happy memories quite like Cup Match. I am deeply honoured to receive the CableVision Community Service Award today.?
In honour of Mr. Zuill's endeavours to preserve sports history in Bermuda, CableVision is making a $1,000.00 donation to P.A.L.S. in his name.
