Troubleshooting Cable Modem

Step 1:

Make sure that the first four lights are on solid green. If there are no power lights, please check the power cables to be sure they are plugged in.

POWER - If the green POWER light is on, the modem is powered on and searching for signal

RECEIVE - If the green RECEIVE light is on, the modem has locked in Forward signal.

RETURN - If the green RETURN light is on, the modem return path shows completion.

ONLINE - If the green ONLINE light is on, this shows you have a functioning modem.

STANDBY - If the yellow STANDBY light is on, this means the modem has its Standby button pressed, the remedy is to push the Standby button to resume normal operation

If any modem will not complete these steps, a technician will have to be dispatched.

PC ACTIVITY This light may be orange or green and may flicker off and on. As long as this light is lit, there is a connection between the modem and the computer. If this light does not come on when the computer is on, there may be an issue with the ethernet cable, the port on the cable modem, or the port on the computer.

Wireless Router:
If all the lights are working properly, and you are using a wireless router,
  1. Unplug the modem and the router
  2. Leave the devices unplugged for 7 seconds then plug the modem in first and wait for all the lights to come on.

No Router:
If all lights on the cable modem are on, and you are not using a router, and you are still unable to get connected to the internet, make sure that your user name and password are entered in correctly.
